{"id":14016,"date":"2025-11-06T18:42:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T02:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orangutan.com\/?post_type=project&#038;p=14016"},"modified":"2025-11-07T19:47:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T03:47:34","slug":"sintang-orangutan-center","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/orangutan.com\/project\/sintang-orangutan-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Sintang Orangutan Center"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Sintang Orangutan Center (SOC) is a <strong>local environmental NGO<\/strong> located in <strong>Sintang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia<\/strong>, on the island of Borneo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mission and Collaboration:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SOC&#8217;s primary mission is to <strong>rescue, rehabilitate, and release orangutans back into the wild<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It operates under an official agreement with the Forestry Ministry Department.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SOC works in collaboration with the Indonesian government, specifically the <strong>West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA)<\/strong> and the <strong>Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum National Park Authority (BBTNBKDS)<\/strong>, to carry out its conservation efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Core Activities (Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rescue:<\/strong> Since 2010, SOC has rescued and cared for <strong>more than 50 orangutans<\/strong>. Orangutans are typically rescued after being victims of the <strong>illegal wildlife trade<\/strong>, confiscated from people who kept them as illegal pets, or rescued after being victims of conflict with local people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rehabilitation:<\/strong> SOC&#8217;s rehabilitation program aims to equip orangutans with the <strong>survival skills<\/strong> necessary for independent living in the wild.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rehabilitation involves medical health examinations and a quarantine period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthy orangutans are transferred to socialization groups where they can learn with peers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The final preparatory stage is training in a <strong>forest school<\/strong>, which is a fenced-in, intact rainforest area, such as the <strong>Jerora Forest School<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Release:<\/strong> The ultimate goal is to return rescued orangutans to their natural habitat so they can live independently. All releases have successfully taken place in a special part of the <strong>Betung Kerihun National Park (TNBK)<\/strong> in Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan, which offers pristine tropical rainforest and abundant natural food sources.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since 2017, SOC has conducted <strong>16 orangutan release activities<\/strong>, returning a total of <strong>36 individuals<\/strong> to the wild.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supporting Activities <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In addition to hands-on orangutan work, SOC provides <strong>awareness and education programs<\/strong> for local communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These programs are designed to reduce threats to orangutans and their habitat, such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Deforestation<\/strong>, by providing sustainable agricultural alternatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Illegal poaching<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>keeping of illegal pets<\/strong> like orangutans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SOC emphasizes that environmental education, introduced at an early age, serves as a vital foundation for shaping a future generation that is environmentally conscious and responsible.
