Medan –\u00a0 The former governor of Aceh who granted a permit\u00a0 to a palm oil company, said he did so to bring attention to failing climate\u00a0 change policies, but SOCP in a response to the governor today, called his\u00a0 actions “completely reprehensible.”<\/p>\n

Digital Journal first\u00a0 reported the plight of Indonesia’s Sumatran orangutans on March 31, after\u00a0 learning that an estimated 100 apes had been killed in 92 fires, burning out of\u00a0 control in the Tripa forest on the coast of Aceh province.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The fires, illegally started by palm\u00a0 oil companies, are devastating prime habitat areas and killing orangutans said\u00a0 conservation groups, who challenged the legality of the permit granted by Aceh\u00a0 governor Irwardi Yusuf in court. The permit issued to PT Kallista Alam, allowed\u00a0 for the development of a 1,600-hectare (3,950-acre) oil palm plantation in the\u00a0 heart of the Tripa swamp.<\/p>\n

After 5 months of hearings in the court\u00a0 case, the Banda Aceh Administrative Court said last week, it had no authority to\u00a0 rule on the case because the parties involved had not tried to solve the case\u00a0 outside of the court room.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

It was an act that Dr. Ian Singleton,\u00a0 Director of Conservation at the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation\u00a0 Programme<\/a>(SOCP) in Indonesia, told\u00a0us could mean the destruction of the forests, and the extinction of the\u00a0 Sumatran orangutan by the end of 2012.
\n<\/p>\n

Yet Dr. Irwardi, who denied the permit\u00a0 was illegal, told Australia’s The\u00a0 Age<\/a><\/em>\u00a0a few days ago, that the permit was “morally wrong,” but he signed\u00a0 it as, “a wake-up call to the international community over its failing climate\u00a0 change policies.”<\/p>\n

Irwardi also denied that orangutans\u00a0 were in jeopardy from the land clearing, an allegation that SOCP is now strongly\u00a0 refuting. In a press\u00a0 release issued to Digital Journal this morning, SOCP said:<\/p>\n

While we appreciate the former Governor of Aceh\u2019s admission that\u00a0 issuing the permit was \u201cmorally wrong\u201d, we completely refute his claims that the\u00a0 remaining Orangutan population has been unharmed by recent clearing and burning\u00a0 of the remaining peatland forests of Tripa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The former governor, said SOCP, had\u00a0 been been “informed on numerous occasions of the presence of an important\u00a0 Orangutan population in the Tripa peat swamp forests.” Furthermore, the group\u00a0 added, while they appreciated the governor’s frustration over insufficient\u00a0 funding:<\/p>\n

“We also find his method of drawing attention to the problem, namely\u00a0 sacrificing carbon-rich deep peat swamp forests and a population of the\u00a0 Critically Endangered Sumatran Orangutan, completely\u00a0 reprehensible.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/div>\n

What has confused many about Dr.\u00a0 Irwandi’s so-called cry for help, is that the man himself has a history of\u00a0 strong conservation policies, yet by signing the permit, he has sacrificed a\u00a0 critical habitat for Sumatran orangutans. One that as part of the Leuser\u00a0 Ecosystem, is one of the largest remaining natural habitats for orangutans in\u00a0 the world.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

SOCP is now insisting that the\u00a0 Indonesian government enforce their own laws to prevent the extinction of\u00a0 Tripa’s orangutans. The group also highlights several law-breaking incidents in\u00a0 the Tripa swamps conducted by other concessions besides PT Kallista Alam ,\u00a0 including PT Dua Perkasa Lestari and PT Surya Panen Subur 2.<\/p>\n

Yet despite a massive push through\u00a0 petitions and correspondence signed by thousands of people from around the\u00a0 world, “no responsible Government official has made a public statement about the\u00a0 case since early December 2011,” said SOCP, who adds that this doesn’t bode well\u00a0 for Indonesia’s global image.<\/p>\n

The conservation group said it will\u00a0 continue to lobby the Indonesian government for protection of the Tripa forests\u00a0 and the orangutans who inhabit them. “We would be betraying the Sumatran\u00a0 orangutan and all our many supporters, if we do not continue to lobby for this\u00a0 using all means at our disposal.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And SOCP has vowed strong action if\u00a0 necessary, adding that it would push for a suspension of Norway\u2019s Letter of\u00a0 Intent on emissions reduction with Indonesia, including its $1,000,000,000 aid\u00a0 package, and ask for a global suspension of all purchases of Indonesian palm oil\u00a0 that is not fully certified by the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Finally, said the Sumatran Orangutan\u00a0 Conservation Programme said, it would completely reject the Indonesian\u00a0 Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification scheme, until the rogue companies\u00a0 operating in Tripa are prosecuted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
