The Orangutan Conservancy helps to support many projects, but one project is the homegrown heart of our organization.<\/p>\n

The 2012 OC\/OVAG Veterinary Workshop is our annual gathering of wildlife veterinarians from across Indonesia – the very people that care for and heal thousands of captive orangutans in rehabilitation centers in Asia. The work these front-line heroes do on a daily basis is inspiring and OC is pleased to bring them together for our fourth workshop.<\/p>\n

This year’s Workshop began July 9th and runs through the 13th. The event is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We are hosted by the Center of Excellence for Wildlife Research and Conservation and Universiti Putra Malaysia (Department of Veterinary Medicine). Also for the first time, we will have the participation of the veterinarians working in Malaysian Borneo.<\/p>\n

The focus this year will be on orangutan stress and well-being, challenges to releasing rehabilitated orangutans, and orangutan cardiology and parasite load. Both wild and captive orangutan issues will be covered in the hopes of providing a more holistic approach to the many issues facing orangutan conservation.<\/p>\n

Funding for this important annual gathering is covered by the Orangutan Conservancy.<\/p>\n

With orangutan population estimates now as low as 40,000 and threats like palm oil and deforestation rapidly pushing the remaining orangutans from their fragmented rainforest homes, this once-a-year opportunity for veterinarians to come together to share their knowledge and strategies to save Asia’s sole great ape is more necessary than ever before.<\/p>\n
