It is\u00a0understood they gave a significant sum towards the project.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is the brainchild of Jessica McKelson, head primate keeper at\u00a0 Melbourne Zoo, and <a href=\"https:\/\/orangutan.com\/from-the-forest-jantho-aceh-besar-sumatra-2011\/#more-2195\">Dr Ian Singleton<\/a>, conservation director at the <a href=\"https:\/\/orangutan.com\/projects\/socp\/\">Sumatran\u00a0 Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP)<\/a> in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Two other orangutan non-government organisations, based in Britain and the\u00a0US, are also backing the scheme, as well as the Australian-based network The\u00a0Orangutan Project.<\/p>\n<p>The project intends to relocate sick and injured orangutans, which are\u00a0unable to be released into the wild and are languishing in cages at the SOCP\u00a0quarantine centre, Batu Mbelin. A chain of four islands will be created by\u00a0 digging moats around the land. Orangutans, which are afraid of water, will be\u00a0free to roam on the islands.<\/p>\n<p>Orangutans are critically endangered due to the clearing of forests for palm\u00a0 oil in Indonesia, the last country in which the flame-haired apes are found in\u00a0 the wild. They also suffer from direct contact with humans, with many shot or\u00a0 captured illegally. Human diseases such as hepatitis are also passed on to\u00a0 them.<\/p>\n<p>Ms McKelson said she was thrilled the project had attracted support. &#8221;I\u00a0 didn&#8217;t think it was possible 12 months ago, but now we have land secured, which\u00a0 is a vital first step. This will be the first time that something has been built\u00a0like this in Indonesia.&#8221;<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A crucial part of the project will be an education centre at the site, aimed\u00a0 at the locals. The centre will highlight the threats orangutans and other\u00a0 animals face from forest clearing and traditional medicine, which results in\u00a0 animals such as fruit bats and tigers being killed and eaten in the erroneous\u00a0belief they cure diseases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;No one has tried to educate the middle-class business people, the guys with\u00a0 the nice cars in the top networks,&#8221; Dr Singleton said. &#8221;At Melbourne or Sydney\u00a0zoo, you&#8217;d get a strong education message, whereas the zoos here are all\u00a0terrible, apart from, arguably, the ones in Bali. But even there you have people\u00a0throwing peanuts at the animals and laughing at them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;The perception of animals in Indonesia is alien to what we&#8217;d find\u00a0 acceptable. But showing people the animals and issues in a conducive setting\u00a0could have a big impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Initially, four orangutans will be moved to the islands after construction,\u00a0set to start later this year, is completed.<\/p>\n<p>The group will include an orangutan with hepatitis and another that has been\u00a0blinded after being shot with an air rifle.<\/p>\n<p>The project is looking to raise about $1 million to complete the islands.\u00a0 Donors will be able to &#8221;buy&#8221; blocks of land in five-metre-square minimums\u00a0 through the Earth 4 Orangutans website to reach the target.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;Orangutans are ideal educational ambassadors, so they make a great\u00a0flagship for the program,&#8221; Ms McKelson said. &#8221;They also deserve a better\u00a0 future than sitting in a cage. Ultimately, though, we have to do more to\u00a0 conserve their habitat. You put one road through their habitat and its splits\u00a0one viable population into two unviable populations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;In Australia, we need to import 100 per cent sustainable palm oil.
