Photo by Brent Loken<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"author\">by Jason Bittel<\/p>\n<p class=\"publication\">for <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/\">National Geographic<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Their habitat is disappearing due to widespread logging, but <a href=\"http:\/\/animals.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/mammals\/orangutan\/\">orangutans<\/a> seem to have found at least one tiny silver lining: traveling on timber roads instead of the more challenging tree canopies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Recently, ecologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/dean-gradstudies\/blog\/studentprofiles\/BrentLoken.html\">Brent Loken<\/a> set up 41 camera-trap stations in the Wehea Forest on the <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/countries\/indonesia-guide\/\">Indonesian<\/a> island of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.nationalgeographic.com\/maps\/map-machine#s=r&amp;c=1.6772799957238513,%20114.00287628173831&amp;z=5\">Borneo (map)<\/a>. The traps were spread out across three blocks of the forest, each representing different levels of logging impact.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In all three blocks, the cameras captured images of orangutans walking. This in itself was unusual, as it was previously thought the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/39780\/0\">critically endangered<\/a> animals kept to the canopy whenever possible.
