There are certainly no shortage of smiles in the recently released Roundtable on Sustainable\u00a0Palm Oil\u00a0(RSPO) 2016 Impact Report.<\/a>\u00a0 And while those smiles\u00a0hint at real progress,\u00a0we at OC hope\u00a0to see\u00a0more lasting improvements in sustainable agroforestry around the world, especially in the\u00a0home of orangutans across Indonesia and Malaysia.<\/p>\n

Palm oil plantations continue to swallow up huge\u00a0swaths of land. The RSPO and its nearly three-thousand and counting members (200 US-based) are all focused on the issue at hand –\u00a0seeing this\u00a0cash crop\u00a0produced in a way that won’t destroy the earth’s remaining pristine forests as the vegetable oil makes its various ways from plantations\u00a0to supermarket shelves across the globe.<\/p>\n

While currently only 32 members are comprised of environment or nature conservation organizations (NGOs), the increasing presence of these groups at the table is a good sign for RSPO’s most forward-thinking growers, manufacturers, processors, investors\u00a0and retailers who by being part of RSPO are saying they\u00a0are committed to\u00a0making sustainability a reality not just a wish.<\/p>\n

The extensive report\u00a0states that palm oil can only be\u00a0sustainable\u00a0if it:\u00a0\u00a0fulfills increasing global food demand, supports affordable food prices, supports poverty reduction, safeguards social interests, communities and workers and protects the environment and wildlife.\u00a0 All are important and necessary, and our orangutan friends are counting on the last item for their very survival.<\/p>\n

And much more will need to be done to achieve a truly sustainable future\u00a0on the oil palm landscape. There are still numerous illegal growers who have no interest in partaking in forward thinking, eco-friendly\u00a0business practices.\u00a0 That\u00a0and inconsistent governmental positions\u00a0often further cloud the issue.\u00a0 Palm oil <\/a>is not going anywhere, but hopefully the movement to produce it sustainably will only strengthen.\u00a0 The Orangutan Conservancy\u00a0asks our supporters to only purchase products that contain palm oil that are sustainably sourced.\u00a0 A great way to learn about some can be found in the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Palm Oil app<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n
