Today, July 28th, is World Nature Conservation Day. We celebrate this day to raise awareness about the world’s health and the need to preserve the environment and natural resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The primary focus for this day is to highlight the importance of saving the many plants and animals that are threatened with extinction worldwide, along with conserving the world’s flora, fauna, and various other resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orangutan Conservation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a species that roamed thousands of miles across the rainforest of South East Asia, the wild orangutan now only survive on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact wild orangutan population count is a challenge to determine, though the various estimates put the current counts at 50,000 to 65,000 orangutans left in the wild. However, nearly 2,000 to 3,000 wild orangutans are killed annually due to economic crisis in combination with natural disasters and human abuse of the forests. Orangutans have lost over 80% of their habitat in the last 20 years, and an estimated one-third of the wild population died in 1997-1998 due to fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapid loss of the rainforests is also attributed to the land being bulldozed by palm oil plantations, which destroy thousands of hectares at the cost of orangutan livelihood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
